I remember it like it was yesterday.
I was in Thailand at the time.
Chiang Mai to be exact (aka. Northern Thailand⦠the foothills of the Himalayas).

Luscious jungles, refreshing waterfalls and motorbikes that I drove wayyyyyy too fast through the mountains š¬
Like every human being ever, I was trying to make my life better.
I wanted to be happier.
Healthier.
Stronger.
And of course, I wanted to make more money.
The problem wasā¦
MY MIND.
I couldnāt stop thinking!
Worse yet, most of it was negative.
Iām not good enough.
What will people think if I launch this new business?
What if I fail?
I donāt deserve to be happy, healthy or wealthy.
I can’t believe I said THAT today.. I’m so stupid.
I knew this was a BIG problem so I tried to fix it.
Meditation.
Gratitude lists.
Journaling.
Self-help books and courses.
Life coaching.
Hell, even talk therapy.
Did it work?
Kind of, yes.
ā¦in the same way that washing my underarms without taking an actual shower ākind ofā keeps me clean š§¼
Sure, I stank less… but I was still sweaty and dirty everywhere else š
Then I discovered the nervous system approach to dealing with the mind and thatās when everything shifted.
In the nervous system model, the mind is NOT the problem but a symptom of something else.
Thatās why all the usual self-help stuff doesnāt work properly:
It addresses the symptom instead of the root issue.
Then thereās the nervous system model, where, according to the emerging science of the nervous system, the root issue or problem is stored survival stress from years or decades gone by.
Thoughts – whether imposter syndrome, self-doubt, anxiety or does that hot guy/girl/telegraph pole like me? – are like leaves on a tree. They grow out of the “soil” of someoneās nervous system.
That means…
If someoneās carrying a lot of stress from the past in their nervous system (anger, sadness, fear, etc), their thoughts will reflect that. Theyāll have a lot of negative thoughts, beliefs and programming rolling around in their heads.
This is a beautiful thing because it means if you want to get out of your head, you donāt have to focus on your thoughts via meditation, journaling or coaching.
Instead, focus on your nervous system – the little-known root of a racing mind.
In other wordā¦
Focus on releasing all the stored survival stress thatās stuck.
Do that and your mind will settle down on its own.
This is exactly what happened with me once I learned how to work directly with my nervous system.
My mind is quieter than its ever been⦠and I canāt remember the last time I meditated, made a list of what I was grateful, journaled or hell, even read a typical self-help book. I just donāt need any of that stuff anymore.
Iām happier, healthier AND I get way more done, which of course, leads to better results and more money in my business.
If you want the same, start working with your nervous system instead of your mind – with the ROOT issue instead of symptoms.
Cheers,
John Wood
