7 Little-Known Reasons Your Mind Is Not The Problem
The Shocking Truth About Stress and Anxiety

John Wood ⭐️
14 min read · 15th June 2024
If you’ve tried “all the things” to feel “better”, but keep hitting dead ends, this is for you.
You might think you’ve got your own path to healing covered by biohacking, meditation, journaling, gratitude lists, taking supplements, being “healthy” and dialed in AF…
…but are you getting to the root cause?
Or are you just applying band-aids to bullet wounds?
If you keep hitting wall after wall, wondering when you’ll stop feeling bad and finally feel good, it’s safe to say that you’re not getting to the real problem.
But more on that in a moment.
First, let me give you 7 little-known reasons your mind is not the problem…
Little-Known Reason #1: Your mind reflects what’s happening with your survival response.

If your survival response (fight/flight/freeze) is activated, guess what?
Your mind will be “activated” too (worried, anxious or angry).
In other words, your overactive survival response is the problem.
Not your mind.
It’s like your kitchen sink, where the water that comes out of the tap reflects what’s happening in the pipes.
If water comes out smooth, easy and clean…
…it means the pipes are clean and clear.
But if water comes out in spurts (or not at all), the pipes are blocked.
Either way, the problem is in the pipes (deep in your nervous system)…
…not in the water that comes out of the pipes (your thoughts).
Little-Known Reason #2: If you don’t feel safe, your mind will not calm down.

You can change your thoughts (gratitude lists), analyze your thoughts (journaling) or even temporarily quiet your thoughts (meditation)…
…but until you feel safe (in your nervous system), your survival response will stay activated…
…and as a result, your mind will keep spinning.
Notice that I said “feel safe”.
It’s not enough to think you’re safe.
You have to actually feel it.
Why don’t we feel safe?
Because…
Little-Known Reason #3: Stored stress makes it hard to feel safe.

As we go through life, bad things happen.
And if you’re like most people, you hold onto the various feelings and emotions (stress) that those bad things stir up.
That stuff stays in your nervous system and tricks it into thinking danger is always nearby.
The result?
Survival mode activated.
To use our kitchen pipes analogy…
The stored stress blocks up the “pipes” of your nervous system and makes it damn near impossible for things to flow.
That’s why you never truly feel safe.
Because there’s a bunch of crap jamming up the “pipes” inside you.
Even worse is the fact that…
Little-Known Reason #4: Stored stress doesn’t go away with time.

When it comes to stored stress and lack of felt safety, the old saying that “time heals all wounds” is not true.
If you need evidence of this, just look at old people.
How many are grumpy, bitter, easily triggered and caught in a mind that never shuts up?
If time healed an overactive survival response, why do some people get more neurotic, controlling and unhappy as they age?
Because…
Little-Known Reason #5: Until the stored stress is released, your nervous system stays in survival mode.

If your nervous system stays in survival mode…
…your mind keeps spinning (like a Merry-Go-Round straight out of hell).
Therefore –
We need to release the stored stress from our nervous system.
We need to clear the pipes.
Then our survival response can finally relax.
The problem is…
Little-Known Reason #6: You can’t release stored stress by thinking about it.

Just like a blocked pipe in your kitchen…
No amount of analyzing your past will release the stored stress from your nervous system.
Talking won’t fix it.
Thinking and writing about it won’t fix it.
Venting to Mary from Human Resources won’t fix it.
To release stored stress from the nervous system…
Little-Known Reason #7: You have to feel it to heal it.

The mind is a beautiful thing.
It gave us comedy, Brazilian Ju Jitsu and chocolate croissants that melt in your mouth 🤤
However, the mind is absolutely incapable of feeling anything.
Its domain is ideas, stories and narratives.
That’s the problem.
Because if you want to heal, you have to feel.
That means you have to go beyond your mind.
Beyond your stories.
Beyond words, ideas and analysis.
Hang on, if your mind isn’t the problem, what IS the problem?
Is it stored stress?
The fact that you don’t feel safe?
Something else?
The easiest way to understand this is with our “kitchen pipes” metaphor.
Imagine turning the water on in your kitchen.

If water comes out smooth and easy, it means the pipes are clean and clear.
But if water comes out in spurts (or not at all)?
It means the pipes are blocked.

That’s what happens with your nervous system.
The pipes get blocked.
By what?
By stress.
The result?
The nervous system gets stuck in survival mode.
Stuck in some combination of fight, flight and freeze.
This is why the mind doesn’t shut up (and why the mind is NOT the real problem).
Here’s how it works:
First, a threat appears.

It could be a tiger, a tsunami or a screaming parent.
It could even be a physically present but emotionally absent parent.
Next, your nervous system responds.
Fear, anger, shame, guilt, sadness and more.
The fuel of the “survival response”.
Our nervous system then starts pumping energy and emotion through “the pipes”.
It’ll pump anger into the pipes if it wants you to attack (FIGHT)…
…fear if it wants you to run away (FLIGHT)…
…or shame if wants you to hide, people-please or not say anything that might upset someone (FAWN).

Hopefully, that neutralizes the threat and restores a sense of safety to your nervous system (because you destroyed it or escaped).
But sadly…
That’s not what usually happens.
For example, take a screaming, abusive parent.
You can’t attack them (and win).
You can’t run away from them.
Therefore…
You can’t actually get back to safety.
But if you can’t find safety, your nervous system keeps releasing fear, anger and shame to drive survival behaviours…
…which is like pumping more and more water into a blocked pipe.
That’s the crux of the problem:
If you don’t turn the tap on and let some of that water/stress out, the pipe will explode.

That’s where the freeze response comes in.
To avoid “blowing a fuse” inside the body, the freeze response shuts everything down and “freezes” all of the stress in place.
That’s how stress gets stuck in our nervous system and long-lasting triggers and buttons form.
The good news is that now the pipes (your nervous system / body) won’t explode.
The bad news is that now the pipes are blocked and your survival response is stuck in ON.
What happens when your nervous system pipes are blocked?
The same thing that happens to your kitchen pipes when they’re blocked:
They stop working.
When it’s your kitchen pipes, a blockage means:
- You can’t wash your hands after handling raw chicken, turning you into an amateur biohazard
- Your sink is now a dish storage unit because washing dishes is impossible
- You can’t get a glass of water, turning your kitchen into an unexpected thirst trap
- Making coffee is out of the question, leading to a caffeine-deprived meltdown
- Cooking becomes a nightmare because you can’t rinse vegetables or boil pasta, so it’s cereal for dinner… again
- The growing pile of dirty dishes becomes a buffet for bacteria, inviting them for a long-term stay
Not good.

Now think about your nervous system.
Given that a blocked pipe in your kitchen creates problems, what do you think happens when your “nervous system pipes” are blocked?
Will you be stronger or weaker?
Happier or sadder?
Healthier or sicker?
Here’s (some) of what happens when your nervous system pipes are blocked:
- Your mind doesn’t shut up because it’s trying to manage all the blocked energy and emotion inside your nervous system
- The tiniest things can trigger you, and you wonder why you’re so upset or anxious about something so trivial
- You procrastinate because the stress of a task is too much for your nervous system to handle
- You can’t sleep at night because your nervous system doesn’t feel safe enough to let its guard down to sleep
- Addictive tendencies increase, as you look for ways to soothe and manage the overwhelming activation and stress
- You might even end up with full-blown anxiety, depression, panic attacks, insomnia, suicidal thoughts or even auto-immune disorders (because your nervous system is too busy managing the blocked energy and emotion inside you to keep up with basic housekeeping duties)
This isn’t just an interesting idea.
This is what’s behind the emerging nervous system healing movement.
The idea is –
Stress causes our nervous system to move into “fight or flight” (survival mode)…
…which causes a cascade of energy and emotion to rush through our body and mind…
…and if we don’t discharge that energy and emotion from our “nervous system pipes”, it gets stuck and creates all kinds of problems (just like a blocked pipe in the kitchen creates problems).

Peter A. Levine, Ph.D., a renowned scientist in the field of nervous system healing and the bestselling author of Waking The Tiger explains it like this:
…when we prepare to fight or to flee, muscles throughout our entire body are tensed in specific patterns of high energy readiness.
When we are unable to complete the appropriate actions, we fail to discharge the tremendous energy generated by our survival preparations.
This energy becomes fixed in specific patterns of neuromuscular readiness.
The person then stays in a state of acute and then chronic arousal and dysfunction in the central nervous system.
…people are not suffering from a disease in the normal sense of the word – they have become stuck in an aroused state. It is difficult if not impossible to function normally under these circumstances.
Peter A. Levine
The “technical” term for this is Nervous System Dysregulation.
In simple terms, it describes a nervous system that stuck in some combination of fight, flight and freeze.

To return to our blocked pipe metaphor, the problem is that the nervous system pipe is all blocked up with stored stress from the past.
That’s the bad news.
The good news is that the solution is simple:
Unblock and clean the pipes 💪

In other words…
Get some of the stored stress out of your nervous system so you can (finally) deactivate your survival response.
This brings us to the real reason the mind is not the problem…
…as well as why most self-help techniques aren’t long-term solutions.
If your kitchen pipe was blocked, how do you unblock it?
You can sit there and meditate on it.

You can make a list of all the reasons you’re grateful to even have a pipe.

You can get out the ol’ journal and write about it.

You can even check your star sign, charge your crystals and take 30 deep breaths.

But you still have a blocked pipe in your kitchen – and the symptoms that come with it:
You can’t wash your hands..
…get a glass of water…
…or do the dishes.
Sucks, right?
Or you could stop the mental masturbation and actually DO something about it.
Like, you know…
You could unblock the damn pipe instead of simply thinking about it.
Maybe you need a plunger.

Or some Drano.

The point is –
You unblock the pipe by unblocking the damn pipe…
…not by rearranging the thoughts in your head about the pipe.
That’s where nervous system work comes in.
Instead of thinking about the blocked pipes inside you (and their symptoms)…
…journaling and making gratitude lists about them…
…or meditating on it…
…you actually unblock and clean the pipes.
That’s the secret.
Unblocking and cleaning the “pipes” inside you.
That’s what resets your survival response.
It’s what restores a deep FELT SENSE of safety to your nervous.
And it’s what shuts your brain up (finally).
Just like with your kitchen pipes…
…the cleaner and healthier your nervous system pipes are, the better things can flow (and the better you feel).

When Sonam first started working on his nervous system, he was processing a difficult breakup and his “pipes” were seriously blocked up.
I taught him some techniques for cleaning out the pipes of his nervous system…
…and he’s now gotten himself back to a functional state.
He’s less stressed overall.
And he’s able to recognize and manage nervous system states more easily and handles them better.

He also consumes less caffeine and alcohol because he’s more aware of the actual feelings they create in his body.
I asked Sonam who would benefit most from nervous system work and he said:
…anybody and everybody, but particularly people who have gone through a recent emotional challenge or people who feel numb, depressed or hopeless because of past trauma, who are looking for a “way back” to a more healthy, loving reality. People like that would get much more direct and immediate benefit from this work.

Other people report similar benefits to nervous system work:
I’m able to see my emotions from a 3rd party perspective instead of them taking over me.
PM
Feeling more grounded and content.
MM
A method to help bring me back to the present when I’m anxious or over thinking
Logan H
Feeling better, more grounded, and in control.
Not letting stress, anxiety, or challenging emotions run my experience.
Getting back to myself and feeling “good”.
Not stuck as often feeling shitty.
Putting into practice identifying how I feel, experiencing the feeling, working with the feeling, and ultimately state change. Becoming familiar – and ok with – my emotions.
Releasing pent up – or current – frustration, stress, anxiety, etc.
Badass tools to mobilize energy and emotions.
Jon
Becoming more conscious of my body and surroundings in order to help relieve anxiety
Shifting awareness to the body and learning to be in the moment
MD
What happens when you feel “more grounded and in control”? When you don’t let stress, anxiety, negative thoughts or challenging emotions run your experience?
You sleep better.

You wake up with more energy.
You stop procrastinating and get more done.
Like Sonam said, you drink less coffee and alcohol because you can finally feel what they’re actually doing to you.
You’re happier.
And like Jon said, you finally get back to yourself and feel good.
Not through self-help mental masturbation.
Simply by cleaning out your nervous system pipes and getting a handle on your survival response.
Then you finally know what true nervous system regulation feels like.
“Regulation” isn’t usually the sexiest word…
…but when it comes to your nervous system, it’s about as toe-curlingly sexy as it gets.

The question is…
How do you get started?
How do you actually clean out your nervous system pipes and reprogram your survival response?
That’s where The Rageheart Academy comes in:
The Rageheart Academy: A Powerful, NEW Way To Clean Your Nervous System Pipes, Reprogram Your Survival Response And Shut Your Brain Up Like Never Before

The Rageheart Academy is a go-at-your-own-pace online course that shows you how to clean your nervous system pipes.
Instead of working primarily with your mind, the secret is to work primarily with your Autonomic Nervous System and survival response.
You don’t need to analyze your thoughts inside The Rageheart Academy.
You don’t need to talk or write about past events.
You don’t need to burn incense, wear prayer beads or sit perfectly still for 20 minutes each morning.
It’s a lot simpler than that.
One of the first steps is cultivating a sense of safety within yourself.
This sends a powerful message to your Autonomic Nervous System that it’s safe to relax.
Safe to come out of survival mode.
Next, you learn how to instantly shift from being in your head to being in your body.
Who knew that by focusing on your body and sensation it would help me get out of my head and process accumulated tension in my body? It’s so simple and obvious, yet genius! Now I understand what people mean when they say BE YOURSELF!
David D
This creates space for old stress, energy and emotion to come up so that it can release.
The more stress that you release, the better you feel.
Deeper into The Rageheart Academy, you’ll integrate movement into your practice, use your voice to tone the vagus nerve and tap into the incredible power of healthy aggression (the fuel of the fight response).
And unlike meditation and similar practices, you can do it at the grocery store.
Instead of leaving your newfound presence on the meditation mat (or in the therapist’s office), you take it with you.

How does The Rageheart Academy work?
It’s simple.
Each day:
- Press play
- Listen and follow along
- Shut your brain up like never before
That’s pretty much it… for a total of 60 audio lessons.
Need more details?
Ok, here ya go:
Sign up and get started with Lesson 1 instantly:

Then when you’ve done Lesson 1, mark it as complete:

The following day, you’ll get Lesson 2:

Hit play, follow along and then mark it as complete when you’re done.
The next day, you’ll get Lesson 3…
…for a total of 60 audio lessons.
The lessons start at 10 minutes and gradually increase in time as you move through the course, averaging 30 minutes by the end.
This is how it works.
1 lesson a day.
And you don’t get the next lesson until you mark the current lesson as complete.
Sometimes, you’ll have to wait a few extra days between lessons.
Why?
Because it forces you to integrate these tools with your daily life.
That’s where the magic happens.
Not in the lesson.
In the daily chaos of eating, sleeping and working for that annoying old fart Brian in Human Resources.
Wait, who the hell are you again?
Oh yeah…
I haven’t properly introduced myself yet.
My name is John Wood and I’m the founder of Rageheart.
Born and raised in Sydney, Australia.
Now living in South America.
Here I am on a hike in Medellín, Columbia (once known as the murder capital of the world – watch the Netflix show Narcos to understand why):

Anyway –
Before I stumbled onto the world of nervous system healing, I’d tried lots of the things people try in their quest to “feel better”:
- meditation
- journaling
- gratitude lists
- breathwork
- affirmations
- stoicism
- life coaching
- talk therapy
- self-help books
- ice baths
- psychedelics
But after ten years of doing everything I was “supposed” to be doing to be happy (everything listed above)…
…I still felt stuck.
It was weird.
My mind still raced… especially in stressful situations.
I continued to have a LOT of negative thoughts.
I felt like an imposter.
I barely had any emotions.
I complained of never feeling truly “alive.”
And like many others…
I drank, smoked and used drugs to escape my misery.
Then one day, I stumbled onto the world of nervous system healing and everything changed.
Within a week, I felt like I’d made more progress than in the previous 10 years of near-daily meditation (plus everything else on that list).
A few years later and I feel like a new man.
My mind is quieter than it’s ever been.
I fall asleep easier…
…and wake up refreshed and energized most days.
I no longer feel like something is missing from my life.
In fact, I feel more aligned with my purpose than ever before.
I’d say it was life-changing…
…but life-changing doesn’t adequately describe how incredible nervous system work is.
It blew everything else out of the water.
If the nervous system approach was a Ferrari…
…everything else felt like a beat-up 1987 Honda in comparison.
I mean, hey, a 1987 Honda will get you from A to B.
But would it really be your first choice? Or your second?
That’s why I love nervous system healing.
For me at least (and members of The Rageheart Academy), it’s better than anything else out there.
But hey, I’m making some big claims and you’d be right to be skeptical.
That’s why I’ve got a KILLER money-back guarantee for you:
If you don’t shut your brain up like never before (in 30 days or less), I’ll refund your money.

Seriously 😎
In other words…
Take Rageheart for a spin…
…and if it doesn’t shut your brain up like never before within 30 days, email me and I will refund your money.
That’s how confident I am this approach.
If you’re anything like Logan, you might shut your brain up like never before in the very first lesson:

Logan sent me this email after I gave him a technique called “Multi-Tasking Awareness”.
It’s one of the first techniques I teach inside The Rageheart Academy and it’s still something I do every day.
You know what’s crazy?
Logan hadn’t even signed up yet.
He just took what I told him in an email and applied it on his own…
…and “silenced his mind like never before”.
Just imagine what you can do with the actual guided Rage (lesson) inside The Rageheart Academy 😲

Frequently Asked Questions
What is The Rageheart Academy?
The Rageheart Academy is a go-at-your-own-pace online course where you clean out the “blocked pipes” of your nervous system.
This restores regulation…
…which means you no longer get stuck in survival states like fight/flight (anxiety, insomnia, etc) or freeze (depression, shut down, extreme lethargy).
As a result, you’re healthier, happier and better. You sleep like a baby. Your mind finally shuts up. You get more done. And you finally feel like you’ve got your mojo back.
Who, specifically, is The Rageheart Academy for?
The Rageheart Academy is for people who want to shut their mind up like never before without meditation, gratitude lists, journaling or any of the usual self-help tools that get thrown around.
If you want to be healthier, happier, less anxious and less neurotic, more productive and more focused, and the usual self-help tools aren’t working for you, The Rageheart Academy is for you.
It will give you a powerful, new way to deal with your shit, shut your mind up and feel more alive than ever before.
But that’s me, John Wood, the founder of Rageheart, speaking (so I’m a little biased 🤷♂️).
When I asked members of The Rageheart Academy what type of person would benefit most from it, here’s what they said:
Anyone remotely interested in healing themselves.
MM
I think Rageheart would help anybody and everybody, but particularly people who have gone through a recent emotional challenge or people who feel numb, depressed or hopeless because of past trauma who are looking for a “way back” to a more healthy, loving reality would get much more direct and immediate benefit from this work.
Sonam Z
Traumatized; too in their head; anxious.
SS
Someone who’s always ON… and don’t know how to be present. Like my mom. She’s very active. And when she’s not working she’s distracted by one screen or another. Instead of feeling things fully she distracts herself.
PM
Someone interested in mindfulness or general self-improvement
Logan H
People who struggle with high anxiety and overthinking
Someone on a spiritual awakening or that wants to work on themselves to improve stress management and emotional issues
MD
Who should NOT sign up?
If you’re not willing to feel uncomfortable, this is not for you.
Don’t get me wrong.
These tools can lead to deep states of relaxation, compassion and understanding…
…and it’s one of the most meaningful and beautiful things you can do for yourself (in my humble opinion 😏)…
…but sometimes, getting to the gold means going through some shit.
That’s why I often tell people:
The Rageheart Academy is not for the faint of heart.
Why?
Because it’s literally and scientifically designed to stir up everything in us that’s unresolved. It’s pretty good at doing this too… often in unexpected and surprising ways.
Our fears and doubts.
Our insecurity and our shame.
Our various coping and control mechanisms (everyone has them).
Plus plenty more.
All the things that keep our nervous system stuck in survival mode with no sense of safety.
All the things most people spend their entire lives avoiding.
As the old saying goes:
Here be dragons 🐉
How does the 100% money back guarantee work?
It’s simple:
If you don’t feel like you’ve shut your brain up like never before within 30 days of signing up, email me and I’ll give you a full refund.
How does the FREE trial work?
You’ve got 2 options:
The 7-day free trial (if you sign up for the monthly plan).
The 14-day free trial (if you sign up for the yearly plan).
Pick the one and you want, enter your credit card details and sign up.
7-14 days from when you sign up (depending on whether you grabbed the monthly or annual plan), we’ll charge your credit card.
How long does it take to see results?
Like I said, Logan shut his mind up like never before with a simple exercise I gave him via email, so some people will see results immediately.
For others, it may take some time (weeks, sometimes months).
Therefore, I can’t give you a specific timeframe in which you’ll achieve whatever result.
Your body and nervous system has its own schedule and its own wisdom.
The more you relax and trust that things will happen when it’s time for them to happen (rather than when you think they should happen), the easier it’ll be.
Me?
In my first week with these tools, I felt like I’d made more progress than in the previous 10 years of daily meditation.
However, a few years later, I’m still using these tools now because they’re so damn useful (I’ll be using them until the day I die).

Remember –
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
If meditation isn’t working for you…
If gratitude lists and journaling aren’t cutting it…
If you talk to your life coach and you still feel stressed and anxious…
…why do you keep going back for more?
What if there was a better way?
A NEW way?
Sure, you can double down on meditation, journaling and gratitude lists…
…but if it hasn’t worked by now, then it’s probably not going to work.
Or maybe it works, but only while you’re actually doing it.
Then you get up and move on with your day and the anxiety, stress and mental chatter returns.
The Rageheart Academy is different.
Once you learn the techniques, you can use them anywhere.
At home on your bed.
On the couch.
Or in a busy supermarket where most people stumble around like zombies.
(This is one of the things members say they love about The Rageheart Academy. They can do it anywhere and it works instantly.)
The question is…
Will you keep doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results?
Will you keep meditating, gratitude listing and journaling because that’s what “everyone” says to do?
Or will you take a different path?
It’s your call.
If you’d like to take a different path…
